The Village has been made aware of scam emails targeting Plan Committee applicants using fake invoices that appear to come from the Village. The fraudulent emails use the Village logo, reference publicly posted agenda materials, and request payment by wire transfer for zoning fees.
Common Scam Characteristics
- Impersonation: Emails appear to come from local Planning, Zoning, or Building Departments.
- Urgent Payment Demands: Scammers use high-pressure tactics demanding payment via wire transfer, which most villages do not use for permits.
- Fake Email Addresses: Scammers often use free services like
usa.com,gmail.com, or variations that look similar to official accounts. - Use of Public Data: Scammers are using names and project details from public, posted meeting agendas to make the emails look official.
How to Protect Yourself
- Check the Sender: Look closely at the email address, not just the name. Official emails will end in official village domains (@villageofsomerset.us)
- Do Not Click Links: Do not click on attachments or links in suspicious emails.
- Verify by Phone: Contact the village hall directly using a trusted phone number from the official website to verify any invoice.
- Report It: Contact local police or the Wisconsin Bureau of Consumer Protection at (800) 422-7128.
